I have enjoyed making gardens since childhood. At age eight, living in the foothills of the Himalayas, I wrangled my friends’ help transplanting wild flowers of the forest to create a composition. As I grew up, excursions through Europe, Asia, Central America and the Caribbean provided me with direct experience of many varied landscapes and exposure to some of the greatest art, architecture and gardens in the world. This is the aesthetic background that I draw from in my practice.
Maintaining connection to California and the Bay Area throughout my life has deepened my love for this place with its diverse ecosystems. Designing lush, yet drought tolerant gardens which include native plants during my thirty-year practice, has helped to grow my respect for and knowledge of this land and its many microclimates. My goal is the creation of useful and elegant gardens woven exactly into context.
